ORGANISERS of a renowned food festival have launched a search for adventurous eaters on
National Chilli Day.
Chilli Fest - held annually at Holker Hall, in Cumbria - will take place this year on Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6.
The exciting event traditionally features a chilli eating contest which sees competitors with a
sense of adventure line up to put their taste buds to the ultimate test.
The person who gets furthest up the scorching Scoville Scale is declared the winner.
Heather Creasey, manager of Holker Hall, a magnificent Grade II-listed property near Grange-over-Sands, said the festival was a landmark in its annual calendar of events.
“We always look forward to Chilli Fest each year, so National Chilli Day seems like the perfect time to start our search for Holker’s 2020 fiery food stars.
“We’d love to hear from people who fancy their chances against a Scotch Bonnet or the
infamous Carolina Reaper during the festival itself, as well as traders looking to showcase their chilli-inspired products.
“It’s always a well attended, much-loved weekend that draws people from near and far, with
something for the whole family to enjoy.”
The potency of chillies is measured using the world famous Scoville Scale.
The higher the concentration of Capsaicinoids in a pepper, the further up the scale it will appear.
It ranges from the humble bell pepper, a perfect choice for fresh and tasty salads, to the mighty Carolina Reaper, hailed as the hottest chilli in the world.
In between are varieties such as Jalapeno, Cayenne and Tabasco.
Heather added: “The gates to Holker Hall open on Friday, March 20 for a packed season of fun and events throughout 2020.
“We know our Chilli Fest in September draws spicy food lovers here from across the UK.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming loyal visitors back as well as those arriving for the first
