Audience enchanted by outdoor performance of children’s tale

ONE of the best loved children’s tales of all time enchanted generations of theatre goers this

weekend during an open air performance in the grounds of a stately home.

The Secret Garden was brought to life at magnificent Holker Hall, near Grange-over-Sands, on Saturday to the delight of an audience filled with children and adults alike.

Visitors poured into Pagan’s Grove - a special feature located in Holker’s parkland - with the

400-year-old property forming a spectacular backdrop to the production staged by The

Storyteller’s Co.

Heather Creasey, Holker Hall and Gardens manager, said the annual summertime event had

been an unforgettable experience.

“The Secret Garden was absolutely magical in Pagan’s Grove. There was a wonderful

atmosphere with everyone immersed in the story as it unfolded.

“Our theatre performance is always very popular but this year has been particularly special with Pagan’s Grove and our formal gardens providing a real spark for everyone’s imagination.”

Cast members led guests on a journey through the gardens to the grove before the

performance got underway.

The Secret Garden, published in 1911 by Frances Hodgson Burnett, charted the tale of Mary

Lennox as she left India to begin a new life at the historic and sprawling Mistlethwaite Manor.

Heather added: “This really was one of the highlights of our year here at Holker though we’ve got plenty to look forward to in the months ahead.”
